Apartment Checklist for First Apartment (Personalized PDF Included)

Moving into your first apartment is exciting, but an apartment checklist for first apartment can quickly turn into a giant list of things you feel like you have to buy.

Between furniture, kitchen items, bathroom essentials, cleaning supplies, and all the little things you never thought about before, it can feel like you need to furnish your entire life overnight.

But you really don’t.

This guide is here to help you figure out what you actually need, what can wait, and what will make your apartment feel like home without spending a ton of money all at once.

We’ll go room by room, starting with the things you need for move in day and then getting into the furniture, bedroom essentials, kitchen essentials, bathroom essentials, and little extras that make your space feel more like yours.

And because your first apartment won’t look exactly like anyone else’s, I’m also creating a personalized checklist tool that lets you choose what applies to your space, lifestyle, and what you already own.

So instead of staring at a huge generic essentials checklist wondering where to start, you can build a list that actually makes sense for you.

The 10 Things You Don't Want to Move In Without

Before you start worrying about furniture and cute decor, there are a few things you really don’t want to be without on move in day.

These aren’t necessarily the most exciting things you’ll buy, but trust me, you’ll notice when they’re missing.

1. Toilet Paper

This one is obvious, but it’s also incredibly easy to forget. You don’t want to finish moving in and realize you have nothing to use when you need it. Keep a few rolls somewhere easy to reach.

2. Paper Towels

Moving is messy. Between dusty surfaces, spills, and unpacking boxes, you’ll probably reach for paper towels more than you expect.

3. Cleaning Supplies

Even if your apartment looks clean, you’ll probably want to wipe down a few things before you start unpacking. Having your basic cleaning supplies ready means you can clean as you go.

4. Shower Curtain

If your bathroom doesn’t already have one, get a shower curtain before move in day. It keeps water from getting all over the floor and gives you a little extra privacy, even if you’re living alone.

5. Bedding

After a long day of moving, the last thing you want is to search through boxes for your sheets. Have your sheets, pillows, and comforter ready so your bed can be set up first.

6. Towels

At minimum, have a bath towel and hand towel ready. You don’t want your first shower in your new apartment to end with you wondering what you’re going to dry yourself with.

7. Dish Soap and Sponges

Even if you’re not cooking yet, you’ll probably use a cup, plate, mug, or utensil. Dish soap and sponges let you clean things as you go instead of letting dishes pile up.

8. Basic Kitchen Items

You don’t need a fully stocked kitchen immediately. Start with a few basics like a plate, bowl, cup, mug, utensils, a knife, and a cutting board.

9. Phone Charger & Extension Cord

You’ll probably be moving furniture around and figuring out where everything goes. An extension cord can be surprisingly useful when your outlets aren’t exactly where you expected them to be.

10. Basic Toiletries

Keep your toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, skincare, and other everyday products somewhere easy to reach. Think of this like packing an overnight bag for yourself rather than unpacking your entire bathroom on day one.

Pro tip: Put these items together in one box or bag labeled “OPEN FIRST.” That way, you’re not digging through ten boxes looking for toilet paper at the end of a long day.

And remember, your checklist doesn’t have to look exactly like someone else’s. The personalized checklist tool will let you choose which of these essentials actually apply to you, so you can create a first-apartment list based on your space, what you already own, and what you still need.

First Apartment Essentials: Room by Room

Once you’ve handled your move-in-day basics, you can start thinking about what each room actually needs.

And honestly, you don’t have to buy everything at once. Start with the things that make each room functional, then slowly add the pieces that make it feel like you.

Living Room Essentials

Your living room doesn’t need to be completely furnished on day one. Start with the pieces you’ll actually use:

  • Sofa or comfortable seating
  • Coffee table
  • TV or TV stand
  • Curtains or window coverings
  • Rug
  • Floor or table lamp
  • A few throw pillows
  • Storage
  • Wall art or decorations

Don’t feel pressured to fill every empty corner. An empty wall is better than buying something you don’t actually like just because the space feels unfinished.

Bedroom Essentials

Your bedroom is one room I’d prioritize early because you need somewhere comfortable to sleep.

  • Bed frame
  • Mattress
  • Sheets
  • Pillows
  • Comforter or duvet
  • Nightstand
  • Hangers
  • Laundry hamper
  • Mirror
  • Curtains or blinds

Your bedroom essentials should make the room comfortable first. The cute bedding, decorative pillows, and little styling details can come later.

Bathroom Essentials

Bathrooms are one of those spaces where the little things matter.

  • Shower curtain and liner
  • Bath mat
  • Bath towels
  • Hand towels
  • Toilet paper
  • Toilet brushes
  • Toilet plunger
  • Hand soap
  • Bathroom trash can
  • Toiletries

Having your bathroom essentials ready means you can actually use the bathroom comfortably from the moment you move in.

Kitchen Essentials

You don’t need every kitchen gadget you’ve ever seen on TikTok. Start with the kitchen essentials you’ll use regularly.

  • Plates and bowls
  • Cups and glasses
  • Mugs
  • Forks, knives, and spoons
  • Pots and pans
  • Cutting board
  • Kitchen knife
  • Spatula
  • Tongs
  • Food storage containers
  • Dish soap and sponges
  • Coffee maker, if you drink coffee

You can always add more kitchen items once you figure out how you actually use your kitchen.

Cleaning Essentials

I would also give cleaning its own category instead of assuming you’ll remember everything while shopping.

  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Disinfectant
  • Sponges
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Broom and dustpan
  • Mop
  • Vacuum
  • Trash bags
  • Laundry detergent
  • Paper towels

You don’t need a huge collection of cleaning products. A few versatile basics can get you through your first weeks while you figure out what your apartment actually needs.

What to Buy First vs. What Can Wait

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when moving into your first apartment is feeling like you have to buy everything immediately.

You don’t.

Instead, divide your essentials checklist into three simple categories:

Buy Before Move In

These are the things you’ll want the moment you get the keys:

  • Toilet paper
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Shower curtain
  • Bedding
  • Towels
  • Basic toiletries
  • Dish soap and sponges
  • A few basic kitchen items
  • Phone charger
  • Trash bags

Buy During Your First Week

Once you’re settled, you can start adding the things that make your everyday life easier:

  • Coffee maker
  • More kitchen items
  • Laundry supplies
  • Storage containers
  • Extra towels and bedding
  • Small appliances
  • Basic furniture

Buy Later

These are the things that can wait until you know how you actually want to use and decorate your space:

  • Wall art
  • Decorative pillows
  • Rugs
  • Extra furniture
  • Plants
  • Decorative storage
  • Statement pieces
  • Specialty kitchen gadgets

Live in your apartment for a little while before making big decorating purchases. You might discover that the coffee table you thought you needed doesn’t fit the way you imagined, or that you actually want your sofa in a completely different spot.

Your first apartment doesn’t need to look finished on day one. Function first, personality second. The personality will come naturally as you figure out what you love and what makes the space feel like home.

How to Furnish Your First Apartment on a Budget

Furnishing your first apartment can get expensive really quickly, especially when you’re starting from scratch.

My biggest advice is don’t try to furnish the entire apartment in one shopping trip. Start with the pieces you actually need, then build from there.

1. Start With the Big Pieces

Prioritize the furniture you’ll use every day:

  • Bed and mattress
  • Sofa
  • Dining table and chairs, if needed
  • Basic storage
  • Coffee table

Once you have those, the apartment will already feel much more functional.

2. Shop Secondhand

You don’t have to buy everything brand new. Thrift stores, Facebook Marketplace, secondhand shops, and family or friends can be great places to find furniture for less.

Just make sure you’re checking the condition, measurements, and whether the item will actually fit your space before buying it.

3. Don't Buy Everything at Once

Give yourself time to figure out what your apartment actually needs.

You might realize after living there for a few weeks that you don’t actually need another storage unit or that you’d rather spend your money on a beautiful rug or piece of home decor.

4. Spend More Where It Matters

I’d rather have a comfortable mattress and a good sofa than a bunch of inexpensive decorative pieces that you don’t really love.

For smaller things like kitchen items, organizers, and basic decor, you can usually take your time and find affordable options.

Your apartment doesn’t need to be completely furnished to feel good. Give yourself permission to build your space slowly and let it become yours over time.

What You Don't Actually Need for Your First Apartment

When you’re excited about getting your first place, it’s really easy to convince yourself that you need everything immediately.

You don’t.

Some things are much better to buy later, once you’ve actually lived in the space and figured out what you use.

  • Fancy kitchen gadgets: You probably don’t need five different appliances before you’ve even cooked your first meal.
  • Huge dish sets: Start with enough plates, bowls, cups, and utensils for yourself and a few guests.
  • Lots of decor: You don’t need wall art, candles, plants, and decorations for every corner right away.
  • Extra furniture: An empty corner isn’t an emergency. Wait until you know what would actually work there.
  • Multiple sets of everything: One or two sets of bedding and towels can be enough to start.
  • Random organization products: Don’t buy storage bins until you know what you’re actually trying to organize.
  • Expensive appliances: Check what your apartment already provides before spending money on things like microwaves, dishwashers, or coffee makers.
  • Every trendy item you see online: Something being cute on TikTok doesn’t mean you’ll actually use it.

Your first apartment is allowed to be a work in progress. It’s much better to slowly create a space that feels like home than spend a ton of money filling it with things you don’t actually need.

Your First Apartment Shopping Strategy

Once you know what you actually need, shopping for your first apartment becomes a lot less overwhelming.

Instead of buying whatever catches your eye, I would break it down like this:

1. Check What Your Apartment Already Has

Before buying anything, find out what comes with the apartment. You might already have appliances, light fixtures, blinds, or other things you were planning to purchase.

2. Make a List of What You Already Own

Go through what you already have before creating your shopping list. You might have more than you think, especially when it comes to kitchen items, bedding, towels, and cleaning supplies.

3. Separate Needs From Wants

Your mattress is a need. That cute coffee table you’ve been eyeing? Probably a want.

Start with the things that make your apartment functional, then slowly add the fun stuff.

4. Set a Budget

Give yourself a realistic amount to spend and divide it between the rooms that need the most attention.

If you’re trying to save money while getting settled, your personal finance habits can help you decide what you can comfortably spend now versus what can wait.

5. Shop in Stages

You don’t have to finish your apartment in one weekend.

Buy your move-in essentials first, furniture second, and decor last. This gives you time to figure out what you actually want your space to look and feel like.

6. Use Your Personalized Checklist

This is where my personalized checklist tool comes in.

Instead of giving everyone the exact same giant list, you’ll be able to choose what applies to your apartment.

You can select things like:

  • Which rooms you have
  • How many bedrooms and bathrooms
  • What you already own
  • Which appliances are included
  • What you still need
  • Your budget and priorities

That way, you’re shopping from your own personalized apartment checklist instead of buying 100 things just because another first-apartment guide told you to.

A Note From Your Local It Girl

Getting your first apartment is such an exciting milestone, but you don’t have to have everything figured out on day one.

Start with what you actually need, take your time with the things you want, and let your space come together naturally.

Your first apartment doesn’t have to look perfect or completely finished. It just needs to be a place where you can rest, live, grow, and slowly make it feel like yours.

So take the pressure off yourself, grab your checklist, and enjoy creating your little space.
